Chapter Chapter 20 in Health and Animal Agriculture in Developing Countries, 2012, pp 391-399 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) or “bird flu” is a contagious animal disease caused by avian influenza viruses (CDC 2007). The HPAI virus spreads rapidly. In particular, the H5N1 subtype of the influenza virus causes a high mortality rate among infected birds (up to 90–100% within 48 h) (CDC 2007; OIE 2008).
