Impacts on World Food Systems
Jill McCluskey
A chapter in Modern Agricultural and Resource Economics and Policy, 2022, pp 37-52 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter discusses Gordon Rausser’s life and career in terms of his impacts on world food systems. His major accomplishment of establishing a public-private partnership that enhanced public-good research, resulted in increased agricultural productivity, and serves as a blueprint for others. Extending his influence are his policy impacts that directly affected international agricultural productivity and food security, including one of the nutritional policy centers he established as Dean that assisted in the formation of food banks throughout the U.S. and revolutionized the kinds of food offered. His students carry his legacy forward, and his policy contributions and institutional innovations have greatly contributed to increased food production, thereby reducing human suffering, and improving health and nutrition. The appendix includes written statements from colleagues who interacted with Gordon Rausser in his impact career.
