Gordon Rausser and the Transformation of Agricultural Economics from the 1960s to the 1980s

David Zilberman

A chapter in Modern Agricultural and Resource Economics and Policy, 2022, pp 53-66 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Agricultural economics originally integrated farm management and farm economics, but over the last century, has evolved to address the challenges of natural resource management, agricultural production and agrobusiness, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Agricultural economics has contributed both new concepts and tools to economics and is unique in its combinations of theory and applied research and engagement with practitioners. The transformation of agricultural economics occurred to a large extent, between the late 1960s and 1990s, and Gordon was a driving force in these changes. Gordon led the field of quantitative policy analysis, developed quantitative methods to assess the impact of various policies. His research led to integrating micro and macro-economic tools in agricultural policy analysis. Recognizing the importance of political processes shaping agricultural and policies, Gordon developed realistic and practical models of political economies to assess these policies. As a researcher, chairman, and a dean, he was among the pioneers incorporating resource economics to traditional agricultural economics and leading to a major transformation that has made agricultural economic research broader and more useful.
