Abstract:
Abstract This contribution deals with a multi-site facility layout and product-to-site assignment problem of a job shop production system to tackle the problem of finding the product program at every production site that minimizes the overall costs induced by internal transports and provision of production units. Because not every production unit is needed to produce a specific product, the decision field of facility layout planning is extended by two questions: (1) Which products are to be produced at which site, and (2) for which production unit redundancies across different sites are necessary? This contribution provides an extended optimization model (based on the quad ratic assignment problem) that combines layout planning of multiple sites with the product-to-site assignment to a multi-site facility layout problem (MSFLP). It is followed by a numerical study to examine the influence of homogeneity on product program and transport costs, which is extended by the variation of the provision costs for the respective production units to find the trade-off between internal transportation costs and costs for redundancies.
