Abstract: Abstract The energetic use of biomass offers considerable advantages with respect to sustainable development. Nevertheless, concerns exist about ecological aspects, such as adverse effects on biodiversity by promoting monocultures, as well as about social and ethical ones. The latter include for example the competition with food crops. Therefore, it becomes obvious that the assessment of concepts for biomass usage should not only be based on economic factors, but on a multi-criteria deliberation. Hence, methods of Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis seem to be suitable in this case. At first, an approach based on PROMETHEE for the assessment of different concepts of biomass usage, which has already been applied exemplarily for a rural area in southern Lower Saxony, is presented. Thereafter, the focus of this paper is to show how this approach could be enhanced to make it more suitable for the sustainability assessment of biomass potentials on a broader, regional scale.
