Abstract: Abstract In steel industry hot rolling is an energy-intensive process as steel slabs need to be heated to about 1,250 $$^\circ $$ ∘ C before being rolled on the hot strip mill. Due to time-dependent piecewise energy demand, the total energy consumption for heating is determined by the hot rolling schedule. However, there is no modeling approach known which incorporates the interdependencies between the schedule, the charging time of the slabs, their charging temperature and the energy requirement for heating. We present a MILP formulation for the hot strip mill scheduling problem (HSMSP) under consideration of energy consumption. It takes into account the mentioned interdependencies as well as setups and makespan.
