Abstract: Abstract The scope of the present article is to illustrate the existence and the particularities of the different types of shopping centers. Starting from their early stages and till nowadays, the shopping centers concept has been continuously evolving and adapting to their specific markets. Depending on the market origin customers might come across different types of shopping centers as they are described in the specialty literature. Either we discuss of the shopping malls, or of the open-air centers, or of the hybrid centers (just to point out some potential categories), the different concepts are going to be described and evaluated with as much as possible existing references and examples from the nowadays situation either from the Romanian market or from the rest of the world. One of the reasons that stood behind the strategies of developing and adapting different types of shopping centers in the market can be found recently, for instance, in the fierce competition that was developed by the online retail alternative. Through this paper, we get a little bit closer to know and understand better the big retail actors, in the brick and mortar field, which are represented by the shopping centers in their different types.
