Shadow Economy in the Regions of Russia: Spatial Aspects

Abstract: Abstract The chapter provides a spatial analysis of the scale of the shadow economy of the regions of the Russian Federation. The values of the local and global Moran index were calculated, and the Moran diagrams were also constructed. To identify how accurately the data of the shadow economy are reflected in the indicators of criminal statistics by regions, a correlation analysis was carried out. Based on estimates of the shadow economy based on Rosstat data on the extent of the shadow economy and the sectoral structure of the gross product, spatial auto-correlation indicators of the shadow economy in the Russian regions were calculated. A significant positive spatial autocorrelation of this indicator was found. Also revealed is a variation in spatial interdependence across regions. Differences in the spatial distribution of the centers of the shadow economy are revealed. The conclusions are formulated on the configuration of the spatial distribution patterns of shadow economic activity in Russia: the area of the greatest prevalence of shadow activity in the western part of the country; the “transitional” zone surrounding it (not free from the risk of the spread of shadow economic activity); isolated centers of shadow activity in Siberia and the Far East; and zones of relative well-being.
