Abstract:
Abstract Sport tourism is a rapidly growing sector within the global tourism industry. This study examines the efficacy of hosting athletic events on sport tourism development in Europe from a European perspective. A cross-sectional survey design based on the quantitative research approach was used to conduct this study. Data was collected from 302 event organizers in Greece using a well-designed questionnaire. The results showed that hosting sporting events has become a vital component of sport tourism, offering various positive effects on the economies, societies, and cultures of host communities. The study’s findings reveal a significant positive impact of hosting athletic events on sport tourism development in Europe. Specifically, the economic impact is substantial, with the majority of participants recognizing the high revenue generation potential of these events. The events also contribute to job creation, improved infrastructure, and increased visitor spending, supporting local economies. In terms of social-cultural influences, hosting athletic events fosters community and national pride, promotes healthy lifestyles, and encourages cultural exchange. This research provides insights into the multifaceted effects of hosting athletic events on sport tourism development in Europe, offering a comprehensive understanding of the subject. It supports the notion that such events can be a catalyst for economic growth, community pride, and long-term tourism development, making them integral to the sport tourism landscape in Europe.
