Abstract: Abstract Resources for the tourism development are limited, therefore, it is important to use them efficiently. Since destination management organizations act as a leader of tourism development in the destination, their task is to use the resources for its development efficiently and in such a way as to ensure the competitiveness of the destination and, of course, sustainable tourism development. Despite the importance of efficient use of resources, this issue is not given much attention in the academic literature. One of the important factors of effectiveness is the financing of tourism development. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of financing on destination management organization performance. This paper offers an analysis of the method of financing tourism development in Slovakia and Switzerland based on secondary research grounded on statistics, official documents and annual reports of destination management organizations, as well as through primary research carried out through interviews with representatives of selected destination management organizations. While the method of tourism development financing in Slovakia is implemented by law, in Switzerland it is individual. This paper can thus contribute to the further discussion on the financing of tourism development not only in the academic field but also for policymakers and destination management organizations themselves.
