A chapter in Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism 2025, 2025, pp 399-409 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The integration of information and communication technologies into our daily lives has sparked debates about multitasking and the impacts of intensive smartphone use. Recent research has raised concerns about the cognitive and emotional consequences of this behavior, particularly regarding digital devices and their influence on tourism experiences. The phenomenon of digital distraction is evident in the problematic use of smartphones in social and tourist environments, leading to reduced social interaction and superficial experiences. This study analyzed the effect of digital distraction on the quality of experience in restaurants. A qualitative survey was conducted with 51 participants, who were spontaneously approached and invited to complete a questionnaire. The data collection process was concluded upon reaching saturation. Data analysis was performed using IRaMuTeQ software. The results identified five main clusters regarding digital distraction and its influence on the tourism experience. The first cluster reveals that smartphones are used to fill moments of loneliness and social discomfort. The second cluster shows that while these devices serve as an escape from anxious situations, they can also increase long-term isolation. The third cluster highlights the positive aspects of smartphones, such as easy access to information, while the fourth emphasizes the loss of meaningful social experiences due to excessive use. Finally, the fifth cluster addresses concerns about security and privacy, highlighting the vulnerability associated with real-time sharing of personal information.
