Abstract: Abstract This article combines different approaches of competence modelling with process management concepts. The European framework ESCO is a key component of this integration. Competence models of this type provide a system for categorising current and future relevant competences. They can be used as a structure for defining requirements for employees’ knowledge, skills and behaviour and can also be used as a basis for identifying skill gaps in the company. A prototype was developed that focuses on the sales process and uses the role of a “sales manager” as a specific example. For this purpose, the job profile description and the associated skills, competences and knowledge domains were used based on the ESCO classification. The results have been illustrated in a web-based environment so that they are easily accessible to users and can be utilised for purposes such as the planning of role-based skill development programmes. The conceptual work described in this paper has laid the foundation for the practical application of process-orientated competence management in two German SMEs from the manufacturing sector.
