Challenges of Telecommuting: Insights into Georgian Employee Experience

Abstract: Abstract The practice of telecommuting has become increasingly prevalent among companies in response to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Consequently, many companies in Georgia have transitioned to offering remote work or hybrid work arrangements to their employees. Prior to the pandemic, however, telecommuting was not widely adopted among Georgian companies. This transformation in work dynamics has necessitated strategic and operational adjustments, prompting employees to acquire new skill sets. To remain resilient and competitive, the workforce must adapt to this new paradigm and adopt additional competencies. While the principal emphasis of the article will be conceptual, it will also integrate empirical insights derived from survey conducted among both employees and freelancers in Georgia. This research will encompass individuals applying diverse telecommunication tools, including but not limited to email, messaging platforms, phone services, chat applications, and video conferencing tools, any kind of their work mode—online or offline, and employment format—remote or hybrid. The paper aims to contribute to revealing the challenges faced by telecommuting employees in Georgia.
