Chapter Chapter 11 in Economic Resilience and Sustainability—Vol. 1, 2025, pp 157-175 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The circular economy represents a paradigm shift in economic thinking, emphasizing sustainability, resource efficiency, and reduced waste generation. This paper examines the state of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Western Balkans in their transition towards a circular economy. Through a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape, challenges, and opportunities, we aim to shed light on the level of circular economy integration in this region. By identifying key barriers and offering potential solutions, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for SMEs in the Western Balkans. We use the data provided by Flash EuroBarometer—549 to measure the level of resource efficiency and circularity of SMEs in WB4 (North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania).
