A chapter in XR and Metaverse, 2026, pp 423-434 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Recent advancements in near-eye display-based extended reality (XR) technologies, particularly augmented reality (AR) devices, have raised important questions about their effects on the human visual system. This study aimed to investigate the impact of using AR headset on visual functions and user comfort compared to conventional computer monitors. Nineteen participants performed reading and visual search tasks over two 30-min sessions. The results showed a significant but temporary increase in accommodative microfluctuations (AMFs) at near distances following AR use, similar to reports of increased visual discomfort. However, no changes were noted in far-distance eye refraction and AMFs. These findings suggest that using AR technology may induce visual stress, indicating that near AMFs could serve as an objective measure for assessing user visual functions. Such insights are crucial for designing and using AR devices to minimize user discomfort and promote more effective applications in various contexts, including education and rehabilitation.
