A chapter in Impact and Legacy of the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) Program, 2026, pp 271-284 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract A documentary play presented in 2023 during the Timisoara ECoC program proved the city’s interculturality in a distinctive way. “Sidy Thal” was the first co-production of the German State Theatre Timisoara and the Jewish State Theatre Bucharest, a multilingual work in Yiddish, German, and Romanian. It depicts the November 26, 1938, anti-Semitic attack at the Municipal Theatre, which left four dead and 72 wounded and was perpetrated by the extreme right nationalistic organization “Iron Guard.” The case study highlights the impact and legacy of the documentary play through its media coverage and the events that followed: the 2023 unveiling of a commemorative plaque dedicated to the victims in Timisoara and the presentation of the theatre performance during the National Theatre Festival in Bucharest in 2024.
