Abstract:
Abstract Color blindness affects 8% of men and 0.5% of women worldwide, yet its impact on tourism accessibility remains under-addressed. This paper presents the Blue Flag and ColorADD Greece initiative, a pioneering effort to enhance inclusivity at 13 beaches in Pieria Region, Greece. The work integrates the internationally recognized ColorADD system, a symbolic language for color identification, into safety flags, signage, and digital tools, to assist color-blind visitors. Key interventions included installing ColorADD-embedded flags on lifeguard towers, deploying informational signage with QR codes, training beach staff, and developing an interactive digital platform with real-time safety updates. Initial results demonstrate improved accessibility and awareness, showcasing how low-cost, scalable solutions can align with global sustainability and inclusive tourism goals. By bridging equity gaps and diversifying the tourism market, this initiative offers a replicable model for coastal destinations worldwide. The work underscores the strategic value of universal design in achieving the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10 (reduced inequalities) and SDG 11 (inclusive communities).
