Abstract: Abstract Given the geostrategic and environmental challenges, the hydrocarbon industry in Romania must adapt and comply with exogenous stressors to ensure the necessary crude oil and natural gas in crisis conditions, including from the point of view of the tax system specific to the sector. Thus, the paper presents and elucidates to a great extent the various controversies that have arisen in recent years regarding the oil and gas royalties that are applied to the sector and how they are calculated. Final conclusions of this analysis reveal the greater importance of oil and gas sector in the economy in these days. This comes at a time when global energy prices are at high levels, while European countries in particular are facing higher natural gas and electricity prices, greatly amplified by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
