Abstract:
Abstract The use of digital technologies is increasingly intrinsic to the processes of organizations in Industry 4.0 and 5.0, encompassing the so-called digital transformation. This usage is progressively challenged to foster value creation aimed at sustainable and social domains. Frugal innovation can address these needs by offering cost-effective solutions and high-value outcomes. However, few studies explore the link between digital transformation and frugal innovation. This paper aims to investigate how technology contributes to frugal innovation in creating a more responsible and innovative organization. Based on a systematic literature review, the findings show the technologies implemented, initiatives pursued, and challenges faced regarding frugal innovation in digital transformation. The main contributions include revealing how frugal innovation can enhance value creation in digital transformation and identifying distinct operational levels regarding its challenges – product development, organizational and ecosystem levels – highlighting areas that need improvement and what could be enhanced.
