Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates the mediating roles of attraction to public service, commitment to public values, compassion, and self-sacrifice in the relationship between ethical leadership and various types of organizational citizenship behaviors within the public sector in Vietnam. These mediators represent four dimensions of public service motivation – a multifaceted construct that warrants further exploration in transitional countries with evolving norms and values. We discovered that the affective dimensions of public service motivation, compassion, and self-sacrifice significantly mediate the relationship between ethical leadership and individual-directed organizational citizenship behavior. Meanwhile, commitment to public values mediates the connection between ethical leadership and organization-directed organizational citizenship behavior. These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of public service motivation in a non-Western context and offer practical insights for leadership in the public sector.
