Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates the relationship between business loan delinquencies and twelve key macroeconomic variables (including two growth measures) alongside six financial indicators in the United States over the period 1989Q4–2024Q4. The main contribution is to provide a clearer understanding of the distributional characteristics of these variables and their linkages to credit risk. Using a multi-correlation framework with leading delinquency data (one, two, and four quarters ahead) and lagged macro-financial indicators over the same horizons, we identify several consistent patterns. Delinquency rates are positively related to loan loss reserves, the share of reserves in total loans, corporate profits, inflation, and unemployment. In contrast, they are negatively correlated with GDP growth, GDP per capita growth, consumer sentiment, and public sector job vacancies. These results suggest that stronger economic activity—reflected in higher per capita income, consumer confidence, and labor demand—is associated with lower loan defaults, while higher corporate profits coincide with increased provisioning and rising delinquencies. Descriptive statistics also reveal notable departures from normality, cautioning against naïve modeling assumptions. Overall, this study highlights the potential of delinquency rates as early indicators of economic stress, with predictive applications to be further explored in subsequent research.
