A chapter in Management Information Systems in a Digitalized AI World, 2025, pp 67-82 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Globalization and the rise of uncertainty have significantly impacted the competitiveness of producing companies. These changes have shifted the paradigm from localized production to globally dispersed supply chains, with many European manufacturers now sourcing components internationally. Small and medium-sized enterprises and global manufacturing companies face unique challenges due to globalization and increasing planning uncertainties. A crucial long-term task for companies is searching for and planning manufacturing plant sites. This involves identifying potential sites, evaluating them based on various factors, and selecting the optimal site. Internal and external factors drive this process, and companies often lack the expertise to manage and evaluate the necessary data systematically. Additionally, companies view themselves as global production networks, making planning and optimizing these networks complex. Integrating geoinformation and information management systems can aid in informed decision-making, though it presents challenges. This article explores the current state of integrated production and network planning and proposes a methodological approach for its development.
