Abstract:
Abstract This paper seeks to intervene into the prevailing debate of human–machine conflict within the sector of weaving in Shantipur, West Bengal, trying to open up the possibilities for a sustainable managerial model of technological operation with the help of case of a recent Government initiative by the Ministry of Textiles, under the Govt. of West Bengal. In that process, it digs deep into the debate between Gandhi and Tagore around technology and machines, to foreground a Tagorite Theory of Management of Technology in the context of the Weaving industry of Shantipur. With the help of two primary case studies, the paper illustrates through the lens of Tagore, how with proper management from the Government, Technological innovations can pave way for sustainable possibilities for positive transformation. In that line, the paper dares to call itself a contribution to the Indian Knowledge system around technology following Rabindranath Tagore, moving beyond the orientalist underpinnings of the Discourse.
