Chapter Chapter 2 in Business Intelligence, 2021, pp 7-26 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the current business environment, business intelligence activities have a mission to support complex information needs and provide valuable insights to business managers and decision makers. Having largely evolved from decision support environments, BI is expected to cover environment monitoring, awareness and other more sophisticated information needs in addition to decision support function. BI can be seen as a specific information system, a cyclical informing process, a technology platform or an information value chain. BI operates in a complex and messy information environment, and its benefits are hard to evaluate. A term “advanced informing” is used throughout the book to separate BI activities from those of regular informing, carried out by conventional information systems. The product of BI is better insights into business operations and environment.
