Abstract: Abstract Ranging from increased legislation, larger data vaults, and the seemingly endless accumulation of data by corporations to issues of access to the Internet, digital rights, and net neutrality, the challenges arising in digital law are many and often overlap. The complexities of the technological world in which we have found ourselves are unprecedented in known human history. Never before have we been confronted with such vast quantities of data, accessible and available nearly on demand, and with such a significant economic drive. The relevance and importance of our data has never been greater than what we see today, as our world continues to shift online in terms of our work, our social lives, health care, and financial movements. This changing world has brought about new issues, both technical and ethical, in how we view our information and online activities with regard to sovereignty and governance in the digital world. In this chapter, we will discuss the current technical and legislative challenges which governments and corporations are facing around the world. We will discuss current challenges which are increasing the need for legislation around the world, such as those caused by increased data awareness and data vault, metadata, data ownership, and breaches. We will also examine the issues surrounding Internet governance including access and censorship, as well as sovereignty between nations and the global complexity of regulations within the online world.
