Chapter Chapter 5 in Understanding Cybersecurity on Smartphones, 2024, pp 71-87 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores other alternative operating systems (OSs) beyond the commonly known Windows, Android, and iOS platforms. The chapter begins by discussing the need for alternative OS options, highlighting the advantages they offer, such as enhanced security, affordability, wider app selection, faster software updates, and excellent customer service. Seven popular alternative OSs, namely Symbian, Tizen OS, Sailfish OS, Ubuntu Touch, KaiOS, Sirin OS, and Harmony OS, are then examined in detail. These OSs have contributed to the diversification of the mobile OS landscape, each offering unique features, security approaches, and user experiences. The chapter delves into the evolution of these mobile OSs, emphasizing how they continuously evolve to meet various user needs and device specifications. While some alternative OSs have faced challenges such as limited app ecosystems and security flaws, they strive to improve and adapt to better cater to user requirements. Looking ahead, it is intriguing to consider the potential impact of these OSs on the future of mobile computing as the industry continues to evolve.
