Chapter Chapter 2 in Green Information Systems in the Residential Sector, 2013, pp 7-13 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In order to establish a common understanding of the IT artifact examined in this study, this chapter gives a short overview of the domain of this research project. First, the German energy market will be illustrated including a brief summary of the development after the liberalization and of current developments. Second, the smart grid concept and as part of it the smart metering technology will be outlined. This includes a special focus on the challenges that are posed to the grid by volatile energies and how a smart grid can help to overcome these emerging problems. Further, a special focus is given to the smart metering technology and its benefits to the supply side. Finally, the concept of transformative services is outlined describing the area that includes the services offered by the smart metering technology.
