Abstract: Abstract The objective of this work was to investigate, which determinants influence the adoption and usage behavior of smart metering technology. More precisely, this thesis ascertained a set of adoption, motivation and pro-environmental behavior related variables that influence consumers’ intentions to adopt or continue using smart metering technology. For this purpose this thesis employed a quantitative research approach, comprising an extensive literature review and a quantitative empirical study. To get further insights into the differences between users and potential adopters of smart metering technology, the quantitative study consisted of two investigated samples one being a user and one being a non-user sample. From the epistemological perspective, in all research phases an empirical positivistic point of view was taken, assuming observable, fixed relationships to explain consumers’ intentions.
