Abstract: Abstract IT outsourcing is common business practice and in recent years has moved to the use of offshore IT service companies. In 2008 we described the outsourcing approach of a large Australian company (Alpha Corporation) over a 10 year period (1997–2006) beginning with the initial decision to outsource in 1997. There are few studies which have documented outsourcing arrangements in as large a corporation as Alpha over such an extended period of time. Taking a historical perspective we briefly discuss the external factors relating to government policy which led to the initial changes in Alpha as the organisation moved from a public to a private company. The move to full privatisation was a key driver for decisions to outsource IT services. We explore from the perspective of external factors and internal IT changes, how Alpha’s outsourcing arrangements matured from 2003 to 2011. The discussion includes the decision Alpha corporation took to engage IT services vendors in India and the impact these changes had on the outsourcing arrangements. Finally we reflect on the learning from this case study, including how the company dealt with the various outsourcing and offshore arrangements during a major company transformation.
