Chapter Chapter 3 in Abandoned Places in the Digital Era, 2025, pp 41-60 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter introduces a method encompassing three political attitudes commonly linked to disaffection: internal political efficacy, external political efficacy, and political interest. We investigate their interactions with social media use for civic engagement and the type of device used to access the Internet. Additionally, we incorporate a contemporary measure, online political efficacy, designed specifically for the digital sphere to evaluate whether digital platforms can empower individuals typically marginalized in political discussions. To achieve these goals, we analyzed survey data from the Chilean non-profit P!ensa Foundation, covering 11,574 face-to-face cases collected between 2017 and 2023. Using Cronbach’s Alpha, we validated factors related to political attitudes and social media use, distinguishing between civic use (political and informational) and other use (social interaction and entertainment). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to explore these factors and their interactions. While most studies emphasize individual or institutional aspects, recent “Geography of Discontent” literature highlights territorial disparities. This study reexamines civic engagement by integrating territorial trajectories and experiences across regions, cities, or neighborhoods.
