Chapter Chapter 29 in Sport Tourism, Island Territories and Sustainable Development, 2024, pp 503-543 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This culminating chapter provides the results of a large-scale comparative study at the intersection of small island states or territories, sport tourism and sustainable development drawing on 26 international case studies across multiple seas and oceans, the findings are focused on the four primary pillars of sustainable development at the island-sport tourism nexus—economic, environmental, socio-cultural, and political (e.g. governance) perspective in comparison. An analytical model is presented as a heuristic tool for scholars and practitioners to utilize. For this international study, the model highlights a multi-dimensional approach, seeking a mechanism to surface best practices comparatively and collaboratively. Several recommendations are provided to meet the urgent call for action in addressing climate change, income disparity, and social inequality at the local to global levels. Among these recommendations is the goal in establishing a global charter and an implementation plan for the practice of sustainable sport tourism for island states or territories, with key performance indicators (KPIs).
