A chapter in Principles and Paradoxes of Sports Economics, 2024, pp 5-17 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Rod Fort is an extraordinary sports economist and prolific writer with publishing credits in Labor Economics, Industrial Organization, Competitive Balance/Sports Leagues, Political Economy, Law and Economics, College Sports, and Environmental Economics. He is a well-rounded academic, sharing his knowledge within both an Economics Department at Washington State University (1984–2007) and a Sport Management Department at University of Michigan (2007– ). Rod’s journey began with an undergraduate degree in environmental studies from Utah State University. From there he matriculated to the graduate program in applied economics at Montana State University, completing the program in 1980. He earned his Ph.D. in Social Science from California Institute of Technology in 1985. Fort’s varied and dynamic academic undertakings have led to the development of a unique research focus. Rod studies the impact of sports policy on economic actors with rational self-interests, concentrating on microeconomic application and analysis rather than theoretical musings. Professor Fort’s works feature noteworthy collaborations with his mentor Jim Quirk (Pay dirt: [1997] and Hard Ball: [1999]), and distinguished peers Joel Maxcy (Competitive Balance in Sports Leagues… [2003]), and Jason Winfree (Location and Attendance in Major League Baseball [2004]). The totality of these wonderful observations, studiesand findings have coalesced into his industry standard Sports Economics collegiate text.
