Chapter Chapter 7 in The Value of Sport, 2026, pp 121-136 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the educational effects of sports and their economic relevance. Sports contribute to education through two key channels. First, physical activity and sports can promote the development of human capital by supporting cognitive and noncognitive skills, such as concentration, perseverance, teamwork, discipline, and self-organization. These skills can positively impact academic performance and, in the long term, enhance labor market opportunities, employment prospects, and income potential. Second, organized sports and clubs play an important role in civil society by fostering personality development, socialization, value formation, and democratic participation. They provide learning environments in which values such as fairness, respect, cooperation, and acceptance of rules are developed. They also enable preventive education in areas such as doping, violence, and safeguarding.
