Abstract:
Abstract This chapter measures the economic value of the commercial sector in the United Kingdom. It puts the commercial sector activity in the context of a government and voluntary sector of sport playing a reduced role in recent times compared to the prominence these sectors had in the early years of the development of the sport market in the United Kingdom. The reason for the increasing importance of the commercial sector in the last century was the increasing incomes and leisure time availability of consumers. Since 2008 major cuts in public expenditure have reduced the role of government in the sport market and constraints on free time have reduced the availability of volunteers. The result is that all the main areas of consumer expenditure on sport are in the commercial sector and this sector accounts for around 80% of all Gross Value Added (GVA) and employment in sport.
