A chapter in The Private Sport Sector in Europe, 2017, pp 33-56 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter addresses developments in the sport industry in Belgium, with a particular focus on the Flemish Region and the Brussels-Capital Region. Data on sport-related companies was gathered by national statistical offices that use the Belgian equivalent (NACE-BEL 2008) of the Statistical classification of economic activities in the European Community (NACE Rev. 2, 2008). The chapter starts with a positioning of sport organisations based on available research in the governmental, the commercial and the civil society sector. After that, the focus is on structural, professional and financial parameters of sport-related companies to estimate the size of the sport industry and particular subsectors. Lastly, an overview of the largest sport-related companies is provided, with a particular focus on the fitness industry. It is concluded that the sport industry has grown substantially over the past years, particularly due to a recent rise in the number of companies involved with the exploitation of fitness centres and sport and recreation education. Moreover, the sport industry has grown relatively stronger than the total economy both in terms of the number of companies, employment rates and revenue.
