A chapter in Startup Ecosystems, 2023, pp 51-64 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The launch and dissemination of a variety of initiatives aimed at encouraging and facilitating the birth and development of new entrepreneurial activities constitute a significant trend in the economies of many industrialized countries. Such initiatives bring out more than ever before a necessary and continuous effort on the part of subjects such as the state, local administrations, universities, and research centers in contributing and facilitating, in the most varied forms, the birth of new businesses and their subsequent development (Smilor & Gibson, Research-Technology Management, 34(1), 44–49, 1991). This chapter presents the main institutions that influence start-up ecosystems. Among these, particular emphasis is given to the university as a key player in the proliferation of new innovative ideas to be converted into promising businesses. The author focuses on academic entrepreneurship and academic spin-offs. This chapter also analyses university incubators, which often and willingly assume a very different operation compared to the traditional incubators and accelerators analyzed in the previous chapter.
