Conclusions: A Future Roadmap for the Transition to Formality Using Digital Services
Colin Williams
Chapter Chapter 4 in Formalization of the Informal Economy, 2023, pp 105-121 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This concluding chapter provides a future roadmap for countries seeking to pursue a transition to formality using digital services, along with fruitful future directions for research. Synthesising the arguments of the book, the first section summarises what is meant by the informal economy and the range of consequences of its existence for different stakeholders, to reveal why a roadmap is required to formalise the informal economy. To develop the roadmap, the next section then identifies the determinants of the informal economy and how an e-government approach addresses these determinants. To highlight the multifarious e-government tools available for doing so, the third section outlines the full e-toolbox available to enforcement authorities to formalise the informal economy. The fourth and final section then draws out some summative remarks on an e-government approach and the future research required.
