Chapter Chapter 9 in National League Franchises: Team Performances Inspire Business Success, 2016, pp 69-75 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Before 1887, professional baseball teams in the Pittsburgh area were independent business organizations that barnstormed throughout the region and are not affiliated with any organized leagues although their managers and players received compensation. In 1882, the strongest team in the area joined the American Association (AA) as a founding member. Its home field was in Allegheny City, which was located across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh. The team was listed as “Allegheny” in the standings and sometimes nicknamed “Alleghenys” in the same generic way that teams from Boston, New York, and Chicago were referred to, respectively, as the “Bostons,” “New Yorks,” and “Chicagos” in the sports writing style of the period.
