Intergenerational Mobility: Micro Level Study

A chapter in Intergenerational Mobility, 2013, pp 61-71 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract We have so far analysed secondary data available at the macro level to bring out the situation of backward classes vis-à-vis the advanced classes in India in terms of Intergenerational Educational and Occupational Mobility. The results indicate that further probe is required to understand the process of mobility of the excluded groups. This is sought to be done through micro-level Field Studies. Focussing on five districts of South West Bengal, we first examine whether the pattern of intergenerational mobility evident at the macro level is also true in the study area. We shall then try to examine the role played by State support through various programs in enabling families to gain upward mobility.
