Chapter Chapter 5 in The Indian Textile and Clothing Industry, 2015, pp 83-93 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The following chapter presents the overall picture of the textile and clothing trade of India amidst formation of new regional economic cooperation and its subsequent constitution of Preferential Trading Arrangements (PTA) among its neighboring countries. The statistical investigation shows that there is a continuous declining trend of textiles’ share in India’s total export basket over the years. More importantly, Indian textile and clothing exports are increasingly destined toward SAARC countries at the cost of the decline in share of its major trading partners in the Western world. In addition to describing some of the major present and forthcoming PTAs of which India is one important member, the study examines the implications of the trade diverting effects emerged from such PTAs. It has also been analytically argued that in the absence of trade barriers, the distance and mode of transport as an indicator of transport cost becomes decisive.
