Chapter 10 in Unravelling Supply Chain Networks of Fisheries in India, 2022, pp 127-132 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Given the importance of the fisheries sector across nations, a large body of literature has developed that concentrates on various country-level experiences. In the case of India too, with marine, inland, and aquaculture sectors thriving, some research has been conducted on the supply chain issues of the fisheries sector. However, most of these studies are localised and touch upon only certain aspects of the supply chain. In other words, they do not comprehensively cover each of the three segments mentioned starting from fishermen to the fork. They are also often silent about how traditional retail chains are changing and what trends are emerging in the sector post-liberalisation of the Indian economy. Some of the more comprehensive works on the subject (see Srivastava in Inland fish marketing in India: an IIM Ahmedabad study, Concept Publishing Company, New Delhi, 1985) are also dated. Given such research gaps, this study attempts to comprehensively map the existing supply chains for the marine and inland fisheries sectors focusing primarily on the domestic market through field visits to different parts of the country. Simultaneously, we also present an analysis based on secondary data and literature. This concluding chapter presents a summary of findings of the nine detailed chapters on the issues relating to the fisheries supply chain. It also highlights the emerging concerns and suggests certain policy interventions.
