Abstract: Abstract Though the major focus of the book is to identify the supply chain for the domestic marketing of fish products, it is also to be noted that the fish processing sector has shown high growth potential as an export-oriented business in the country. Since the main raw material for these processing firms is fish, accounting for 70% of the total input cost (TERI in Cluster profile report—veraval seafood processing industries, The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi, 14 pp, 2017), there is a long supply chain involved in the export process, and inefficiencies in any part of the supply chain are also a cause for concern. This chapter first identifies the supply chain in the export market and then moves on to discuss the concerns and possible remedial measures. The chapter is based on our field survey undertaken in Cochin, Kerala, as the majority of the fish landing centres and processing units in India are located there. Methodologically, this research was conducted primarily through a qualitative survey, as well as participant observations. Interactions with the fish processing units as well as fishermen, boat owners, auctioneers, and other traders and Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) officials were undertaken to derive policy implications for the sector.
