A chapter in Handbook on Blockchain, 2022, pp 197-213 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides a high-level introduction to scaling solutions for blockchains, with a special focus on Ethereum 2.0. Current blockchain capacity is a hurdle for the widespread adoption of Web3 and cryptocurrencies. First, we discuss the considerations and pitfalls of blockchain scaling strategies. We then explore the design landscape—layer-1 and layer-2 solutions—and discuss concepts in each category, namely sharding, rollups, and sidechains.
