Chapter Chapter 1 in Practical Chemical Process Optimization, 2022, pp 1-51 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Consider the situation where you have been asked to design a vertical, cylindrical storage tank with torispherical heads. The only information that you have been provided with is the operating pressure of the tank (from which you can deduce the thickness of the shell) and the volume of the tank. The question is how to proceed and present a practical solution to this seemingly simple problem. The first thing to realize is that the problem at hand has two degrees of freedom which are the tank diameter d and the tank height h. The meaning is that once you specify the diameter and the height of the tank, then the design is practically finished. Any combination of d and h that satisfy the volume constraint.
