Chapter Chapter 11 in Optimal Control of Switched Systems Arising in Fermentation Processes, 2014, pp 159-175 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, we focalize on optimal control of a switched time-delay system arising in constantly fed-batch fermentation process. In the optimal control model, the switching instants as well as the terminal time is taken as the control function. By using a time-scaling transformation, the optimal control problem with free terminal time is transformed to the one with fixed terminal time. Furthermore, the switching instants in the transformed optimal control problem are parameterized as a new parameter vector. Then, the gradients of the cost functional and constraints with respect to the terminal time and the new parameter vector are derived respectively. On this basis, a gradient-based optimization technique is developed to seek the optimal switching instants and terminal time. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.
