Abstract:
Conclusion A simple use of general systems theory suggests that the ROH system of interest has a supra-system and sub-systems which are inconsistent with one-another, and incompatible with the known objective of the system of interest. There is no synergy between the interacting systems, indeed there appears to be ‘anti-synergy’, if such a concept is possible. Unless these incompatibilities are reconciled, the ROH system will fail, and it is proving this point by heading rapidly towards disintegration. The problem can be resolved if the resources from public funds are increased to a level compatible with that of other international opera houses. Another option would be to reduce the standard of the product to a national standard which would be consistent with the resources input. A third option would be to abandon the principle of accessibility, regardless of the use of tax revenue. Any of these changes will render the system of interest and its sub- and supra-systems compatible. There is no other viable option. Put in simpler terms, if you want international opera and ballet, you have to pay the international market price. Basic economics and simple systems science go hand in hand. A failure to take a holistic view of the overall funding of the ROH is leading to a massive waste of money, and serious damage to hard-won artistic standards.
