Abstract: Conclusion Screening/surveillance for HCC is a subject of increasing importance as the cohort of patients with chronic viral hepatitis ages. The topic has been the subject of debate at several recent international conferences. In the absence of data, it is impossible to develop consensus guidelines, but some form of practice guideline is sorely needed. The lack of data also points to the need for randomized controlled trials of screening/surveillance or of therapy of small lesions, whether they be preneoplastic or neoplastic. Multicenter studies would be preferable to reduce the time needed to recruit the appropriate number of subjects. HCC has not yet received the attention it deserves from the oncology community nor from funding agencies. However, over the next decade or so, this will likely change as the incidence of and mortality from HCC increases. The next 10 years will hopefully be a golden age?of HCC research.
