Abstract:
Conclusions The study of precursor lesions has provided a great deal of information on the factors which eventually increase risk of skin cancer. Prevention studies suggest that precursor lesions, such as actinic keratoses and melanocytic nevi, can be utilized as endpoints in chemoprevention trials aimed at evaluating the usefulness of sunscreens in the prevention of squamous cell carcinoma and perhaps cutaneous malignant melanoma. These lesions are also apt to be ideal intermediate endpoints for use in community trials which seek to alter susceptible childrens’ outdoor behavior. More use will be made of them as we move toward prevention rather than treatment of cancer.
