Abstract:
Abstract Since January 2005, the European Emission Trading Scheme is compulsory for many companies. For these companies the CO2 emissions increase the internal energy and environmental costs. Therefore, the allocation of CO2 emission certificates is an important economic issue for the companies covered by the scheme. This paper analyses the relevance of product-based benchmarks in the context of Emission Trading as a basis for the rational use of energy and corporate sustainability. A method for the allocation of CO2 emission certificates based on benchmarks has been derived within a research project at RWTH Aachen University. The general procedure is described and exemplified by a production plant from the cement industry. Furthermore, the implications of these benchmarks for the industry are discussed in view of their potential to stimulate corporations and innovations in the market.
