Abstract:
Abstract For functions of one variable, a unique critical point that is a local maximum is necessarily a global maximum. But this is false in higher dimensions. An example is the graph shown, of the function 3 x e y – x 3 – e 3y : there is only one critical point and it is a local maximum but not a global one.
